Firstly, on a conceptual level, CNC is a type of control. And CNC lathe is a specific type of machine tool, which is mainly used for machining rotary body parts. Simply put, CNC lathe is a specific application carrier of CNC technology.


In terms of processing objects, CNC has a wider range of applications. Since CNC can control a variety of machine tools, such as milling machines, machining centres, EDM machines, etc., its processing object covers almost all shapes of mechanical parts. For example, CNC milling machines can process complex moulds, parts with curved surfaces and grooves; CNC machining centres are capable of milling, drilling, tapping and other kinds of machining on box-like parts. However, CNC lathe mainly focuses on processing rotary body parts, such as shafts and disc parts. For example, the transmission shaft of the car, the rotor of the motor and so on are the typical objects of CNC lathe processing.


From the processing mode, the machine tool under CNC control (milling machine, for example), the tool rotates at high speed, and through the movement of the table in the direction of X, Y and Z axes, the tool carries out cutting processing relative to the workpiece, and processes a variety of flat surfaces, curved surfaces and holes, and other shapes. In terms of programming, CNC programming is more complex in terms of what and how it is programmed because it involves multiple machine types. CNC lathe programming is relatively simple and direct, mainly centred around the rotation of the workpiece and the movement of the tool in the two coordinate axes (X-axis and Z-axis) to write the program, focusing on controlling the depth, length and other parameters of the turning.
